Lesson organization:

Our three-year economic high school is divided into:

The preliminary stage (Class 11) – Your entry into the business high school.

In the 11th grade, you learn in your class and are accompanied by a class teacher. In a class council hour, you discuss current issues together.

Classes usually start at 7:45 AM and end around 2:35 PM.

The learning opportunities include the profile area and the general education area. In this area, you can choose several subjects yourself – this is how you shape your profile. In the download area, you will find an exemplary timetables for an 11th grade (link).

The study level (grades 12 and 13) – Economics in focus, advanced preparation for the Abitur!

In the study phase, you learn in a course system and are accompanied in a small group by a tutor. Regularly, you have learning development talks to support you in the best possible way on your path to the Abitur.

In the profile area, you have the opportunity to take Economics bilingual. In the seminar subject, you work on a project basis on your own business idea and a business plan.

Do you want to know what content is covered in the profile subjects or how the final exams are conducted? Then take a look at our additional information.

Subjects in the profile area

Business Administration (4 hours), Economics (1 hour), Data Processing (2 hours only in 11th grade) and Seminar Subject (2 hours), as well as an elective offering (Law & International Trade & Logistics Management), if you have already successfully completed a second foreign language in lower secondary school.

Contents in the profile subjects - A solid introduction to the world of economics

Since many economics subjects are new to you, we provide you here with an overview of what to expect.

The business high school provides you with practical insights into economic connections – from decisions in companies to global economic processes. The lessons are oriented towards current questions and link theory with real business practice. You will work on the following topics, among others:

Understanding and shaping business management decisions

You analyze business processes, develop marketing strategies, assess investments and financing, calculate prices, and train entrepreneurial thinking. (here we would like to add short explanatory videos from students)

Economic interrelationships penetrate

You learn how markets function, what role economic policy plays, and what challenges globalization, inflation, unemployment, and sustainability bring. Optionally bilingual. (here we would like to add short explanatory videos from students)

Analyze data and work digitally

In the subject of data processing, you will learn how to work professionally with spreadsheet programs and presentation software like PowerPoint and Canva, and how to use AI purposefully. (here we would like to add short explanatory videos from students)

Seminar subject – scientific work from the very beginning

You develop a research question, conduct research, evaluate sources, and write a paper. Presentation techniques and project work are also included. In 12th grade, you develop a sustainable business idea along with a business plan in teams. (with explanatory videos)

For those who have already successfully completed a second foreign language for four years, we offer the following alternative option in the profile area starting from the school year 2026/2027:

International Trade & Logistics Management – Thinking Globally in Business

Do you want to know how goods travel around the world, how international supply chains are managed, and what lies behind global trade? In this bilingual course, you will dive into the exciting world of international economic transactions.

Law – From fundamental rights to court rulings

You learn the basics of our legal system, understand how laws are created and how our legal system is structured. You analyze real cases, discuss current issues, and learn to clearly recognize legal contexts and evaluate them thoroughly.

Learning at the business high school - versatile, practical, future-oriented

We create learning environments in which students take responsibility for their learning process. In doing so, we specifically promote subject-related and cross-disciplinary competencies:

Self-organized learning – with time and space

In our pool hours, the students manage their learning independently. They work on individual focuses, review content, deepen projects, or prepare for exams - supported by teachers who provide advisory assistance. This fosters initiative, self-organization, and reflective competence.

Project-based learning

In many subjects, project-based learning is at the center. The young people apply project management methods such as Kanban, Design Thinking, and Scrum, and develop learning products such as podcasts, business plans, learning portfolios, infographics, and much more – that showcase what they can do. They learn to work in a team, argue convincingly, and present their results.

Learning with external experts

Theory meets practice: In workshops with external experts from business, science, or civil society, young people deepen their knowledge of current topics. Whether it's media education, sustainability, or financial education – external impulses broaden their perspective beyond the classroom.

Learning in other places

Learning does not only take place in the classroom with us: Whether in the Körber Start-up Hub, in the MINTarium, during career orientation days, in work shadowing, or during visits to universities and companies – our students gain experiences in diverse learning environments.

Learning internationally - across borders

As a European school with Erasmus+, we facilitate international encounters, e.g., with partner schools in Spain, Ireland, and Denmark. In projects and internships, the students strengthen their language skills, openness, and intercultural competence.

With this variety of learning settings, our students not only develop their subject knowledge but also key qualifications such as communication skills, teamwork, media and IT competence, personal responsibility, and self-organization. This prepares them well for the demands of the modern workplace and for successful studies.

Exam:

After completing the 12th grade, the school part of the entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences can be obtained. There is no separate final examination. To obtain the full entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences, a practical phase of at least one year must follow. Further information and the recognition of the entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences are provided by the school information center.

Graduation with the general university entrance qualification (Abitur) at the end of class 13.

The Abitur in Hamburg includes three written and one oral examination subject:
  • Business Administration as a profile subject is a written examination subject.
  • One of the core subjects (German, English, Math) at an advanced level is the 2nd written exam subject.
  • Another core subject (German, English, Mathematics) at advanced or basic level is the 3rd written or oral examination subject.

The 11th grade at the business high school of BS:WI

Cooperation – Communication – Learning Optimization

It is important to us that you feel comfortable and settle in quickly at your new school, because these are important conditions for being able to learn well.

In doing so, we want to support your successful school attendance through our concept 'Cooperation – Communication – Learning Optimization.' The concept consists of three consecutive components:

Module 1

Einführungstage in Klasse 11:
