School-based qualification for migrants with a focus on English (NQE)
Introduction:
The additional qualification focusing on English (NQE) offers you the opportunity to specifically improve your English skills – however, it is not an additional school diploma.
If you want to apply to a secondary school (e.g. higher commercial school or vocational gymnasium) later on, your English and German grades from the NQE can, under certain circumstances, be considered as additional criteria to your ESA or MSA qualification.
Our experience shows: Many of you can successfully participate in vocational schools or further education schools after the NQE. At the same time, it increases your chances in applications for the dual training system.
During the NQE courses, you will build your English skills, which correspond to about six years of English lessons, and also improve your German skills. If you have a secondary school diploma and aim for a specialized high school diploma or general high school diploma, you will receive a solid foundation in grammar. In the area of vocabulary, you may need to catch up a bit – of course, we will support you with that.

What should you bring in order to participate?
- A first general education or intermediate school diploma (ESA or MSA) – or an equivalent qualification from your home country.
- You are obligated to attend vocational school, which means you have completed less than 11 school years so far.
- You have no or only limited English skills (a maximum of 3 years of English classes).
- Your main residence is in Hamburg.
If you are motivated to improve your English skills and prepare for the next steps in your educational or professional career, then the NQE is just right for you!

You can obtain the registration application at the school office or here as a download. The registration must be done in person. Please include the following documents with your application:
- complete resume (especially fully regarding school attendance and degrees)
- the last report card
- two passport photos
- a registration certificate with primary residence in Hamburg or the identity card, if applicable, residence permit
